Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born within Long Beach California. DuVernay grew up with her Aunt Denise She encouraged DuVernay to pursue her artistic talents and be inspired by art. She worked as a night nurse, allowing her mother the time she required in the day for the love of theatre, literature, and art. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she was able to introduce her. DuVernay discovered that art can be an effective way to spread social activism. DuVernay had parents who were socially aware and showed her how to make use of the arts as a way of expressing herself. Although DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she always spent summers living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers that she spent in the state to stimulate her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. When she was still in school, DuVernay began to consider producing in broadcast journalism. DuVernay began working as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to look over the residence of one of the jurors of the jury and look through their trash. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay determined to make a move in public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from the college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. She also started several promotion and lifestyle networks for the urban beauty industry, including The Urban Beauty Collective.
