Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay lived with her aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was attracted by art. DuVernay worked as a night nurse, allowing her aunt to have the time she needed during the working day to pursue her passion for the arts, literature and theater. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she was able to introduce her. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art could serve to engage people. DuVernay grew up with parents who were knowledgeable about society and taught her how she could use the arts as a means of expression. While DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her parents, she always spent summers at Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. Her father was awed by the famous civil rights protest on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the time that she spent in the state to stimulate her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles when she graduated, where she was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the garbage of one of members of the juries. Her duties left her unhappy by journalism and she chose to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was hired right out of college as a junior publicist at the studio that was small. In 1999, she established her own business of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. The company also launched a variety of promotion and lifestyle networks including The Urban Beauty Collective.
